It was our pleasure to have Connie Keller from Sullivan County Literacy Volunteers visit at our last meeting and tell us all the good things that are happening at her organization. Tutoring is currently occurring in Monticello, Fallsburg, Liberty, and Jeffersonville.  Additionally, newer programs including Story Time for Children, Financial Literacy, and Health Literacy have been added to assist our community.

This year Connie brought with her Jadwiga, a student who emigrated from Poland and benefitted greatly from Literacy Volunteers tutoring.  Jadwiga works at The Center for Discovery as an overnight supervisor.  She could not speak any English initially and is now at High School Level.  Jadwiga has been with the program for just a couple of years and has made enormous strides.  She finds Literacy tutoring very effective because it is one on one and students progress at their own pace.  From this program, she is more confident in her work place because of the improvements in her language skills.

Liberty Rotary Club was pleased to make a $500 donation to Sullivan County Literacy Volunteers.  The work they do is truly remarkable and makes a vital contribution to the lives of those who participate in their programs.

Liberty Rotary encourages everyone to check out the Read-it-Again non-profit used-book store located in Monticello, NY. All proceeds go to benefit the Literacy Volunteers of Sullivan County and its mission to bring books and literacy to county residents who are unable to read.
