The Liberty, NY Rotary Club with the support of Rotary Districts 7210 (NY Catskills/Hudson Valley), 7910 (Central Massachusetts) and 7000 (Puerto Rico) in partnership with Operation Endeavor and Wings of Michael is conducting a hurricane relief drive to raise funds that will provide support for the victims of Hurricane Irma.  The drive will kickoff on Tuesday, December 12th, targeting Moca, Puerto Rico, a municipality on the northwest corner of the island, one of the hardest hit areas of the storm.  The four areas of support for which monetary donations are being accepted: Food and Clean Water Supplies, Emergency Shelter and Construction Supplies, Flu and Tetanus Vaccinations and the Moca Rotary Club Toy Drive.

A team from the Liberty NY Rotary Club (LNYRC and District 7910), Operation Endeavor (OE) and Wings of Michael will be traveling to Moca, Puerto Rico for a Hurricane Relief Mission in early January.  The team will be participating in relief effort activities coordinated by our contacts from the Moca Rotary Club (MRC), the Mayor of Moca, and Nuestra Senora de la Monserrate Catholic Parish (NSDLM).  Activities will include aiding in food and clean water distribution, emergency shelter construction, flu and tetanus vaccination clinic and toy distribution to children who sustained total losses during the hurricane.

100% of all funds raised for these hurricane relief efforts will be donated to the MRC to purchase and distribute supplies to those families in need.  MRC officials will be supplying the LNYRC with monthly reports of how the funds have been spent including receipts and photos. All funds will be supporting the hurricane relief victims and their families in Moca, Puerto Rico.

It’s been almost 3 months since Hurricane Irma made landfall on the island of Puerto Rico.  The 10th most intense Atlantic hurricane on record caused catastrophic damage and a major humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico.  The Liberty NY Rotary Club and Operation Endeavor are hearing the calls for help as well as the desire for many to help and have taken this time to assess the conditions in Puerto Rico with the goal of joining in on the hurricane relief effort to help the citizens of Puerto Rico, demonstrate support and solidarity as Americans and Rotarian in the spirit of our motto of “Service Above Self”.

After much thought and investigation and as a result of a reconnaissance mission to Puerto Rico conducted by Stuart Hirsch and Wings of Michael, we have identified the community of Moca to target for our hurricane relief efforts.  Moca is a municipality of Puerto Rico (U.S.) that was hardest hit by the hurricane and is located in the northwestern region of the island.  Moca is spread over 12 wards and is part of the Aguadilla-Isabela-San Sebastian Metropolitan Statistical Area.

As a result of Stuart’s visit we have established contacts and relationships with Rotarians Nelson Quinones Cotte (Moca Rotary Club President), Johnny Nieves and John Richardson (both Past District Governors RI District 7000), John Enrique Avilas (Mayor of Moca), Father Juan and Father Caro, Dr. Lemuel Soto (GP Physician) and Eduardo Cordero (US Army Retired) of Nuestra Senora de la Monserrate Catholic Parish (NSDLM). Meetings and discussions took place during Stuart’s Thanksgiving weekend mission with all of the aforementioned contacts and we have identified four areas of support that we will be targeting donors, as follows:

  1. Food and Clean Water Support – These funds will assist with in-country purchases of basic food and water supplies for ongoing distribution to the hurricane victims of Moca.  Funds will also be used to purchase and distribution of chlorine tablets for purifying water sources to prevent waterborne disease
  1. Emergency Shelter Support and Construction – These funds will assist with in-country purchases of building supplies to repair all roofs with shelter tarps.  Supplies will be purchased from Home Depot in Mayaguez (within 1 hour of Moca) helping to stimulate the local economy.  Purchases and transportation of supplies will be facilitated by the Moca Rotary and NSDLM teams.
  1. Vaccination Clinic For Hurricane Victims – Funds raised will be used to procure vaccines for a major vaccination clinic for 300-1000 victims of Hurricane Irma.  The clinics will be administered by Dr. Lemuel Soto, MD and will be conducted in the regional churches as epicenters of the community with Operation Endeavor and WOMSAR Emergency Medicine Professionals.  The clinic will include Flu, Tetanus and Diptheria Vaccinations.
  1. Moca Rotary Christmas Toy Drive – A portion of the funds raised will be used to purchase gifts for the children of familes who sustained total losses during the hurricane.  This will help to ease and mitigate the sense of sheer loss and psycho-trauma experience by the children survivors of Hurricane Irma.
