ImageLiberty was bustling with activity this Memorial Day Weekend as it hosted its first ever All American Soap Box Derby.  33 cars competed in the race down North Main Street, all vying for a chance to compete in the championships at the historic Akron Hill in Ohio.  The races have two divisions for both boys and girls consisting of Stock(ages 7-13) and Super Stock (ages 10-17).  One car from each division will go to Ohio.

ImageLiberty Rotary Club was proud to sponsor a car in the race and have a number of our members work as volunteers at the start and finish lines.  The young man that drove our car was Jacob Feigenbutz who did very well, but unfortunately did not make it to the championship.  We are appreciative of Jacob for his fine efforts and sportsmanship.

The event was presented by the Sullivan County Soap Box Derby and Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce; the Gold Sponsor was the Monticello Motor Club and the Silver Sponsor is Thunder Country 102.

Given our town’s inexperience, the event seemed to go very smoothly and the youths involved were extremely enthusiastic.  The derby drew a significant crowd and all those involved seemed to enjoy the day.  Overall, it was a very good start to what promises to be a fun filled annual tradition for Liberty NY.
