ImageMike Martin speaks to Liberty Rotary Club about DOVE, an organization dedicated to aiding the victims of domestic violence.

Mike Martin is one of the cofounders of a program called DOVE(Domestic Violence Ended), and when he speaks about its initiatives, his dedication to the victims of domestic violence is obvious.  A member of Mike’s family has been the victim of abuse and that is what motivated him to create a Rotary program to aid its victims.

Mike explained that those who commit domestic violence are trying to create absolute control over another person.  This abuse normally goes through a cycle starting with verbal abuse, then emotional, and finally physical harm.

One in four women report being the victim of domestic violence at some point.    About 85% of victims are female and the other 15% are male.  That works out to about 5 million victims of domestic violence, of which many are killed.

The key to helping a family is separating the abused from the abuser geographically.  DOVE encourages Rotary groups to aid their local organizations and programs in helping these families.  He suggested that clubs can raise money and give it to these organizations.  We can also help provide services and goods to the victims, so that they can reestablish their lives and seek gainful employment.

We thank Mike for his commitment to helping the victims of domestic violence and for letting us know how Rotarians can help make a difference for those that have endured the pain of domestic violence.
